White
Horse Dagoba is situated 1 km (0.62 mile) west of Dunhuang City, Gansu
Province. It was first built in 386AD, and had been restored many times
in subsequent years. Though so many years has being past, the White Horse
Dagoba is still grandiose.
This 9 story pagoda was built on an octagonal foundation. The body resembling
up-turned lotus flower presents the Lama architectural style of the Ming
Dynasty (1368 -1644). Wind-bells are hung on each angle of its hexagonal
roof. It is said that the dagoba is the burial place of a white horse.
Kumarajiva is one of the masters who translated Buddhist sutras into Chinese.
When he arrived here, his white horse got sick and died. In memory of
his loyal horse, Kumarajiva and local Buddhist followers raised money
and built the dagoba.
