Guilin is situated along the Li River and in the northeast part of Guangxi Zhuang Ethnic Group Autonomous Region. It covers an area of 4,194 square kilometers and a population of 1.25 million. For more than two thousand years, from the Song to the Qing Dynasty, Guilin has been the political, economic, and cultural center of Guangxi, formerly a province and now an autonomous region. It is still an important city in China nowadays.
