Hangzhou

Hangzhou, described as “the most beautiful and luxurious city in the world” by the noted Italian traverler Marco Polo in the 13th century.

Hangzhou is located on the low reaches of Qiantang River in southeast China, with a distance of 180 kilometers to Shanghai. It is one of the key cities in the Yangzi Delta area.
With a history of more than 2,200 years, Hangzhou had once been the capital of Wu and Yue Kingdoms in Spring and Autumn Period and the capital of Southern Song Dynasty. It is famous for its natural beauty and the historical and cultural heritages and listed as one of the seven ancient capitals.

Hangzhou is located at the southern end of the Grand Canal of China. It covers 16,596 Km2 with a population of 6.516 million people, of which the city proper covers an area of 3,068 Km2 with a population of 4,016 million people. In July the average high temperature is 33 degrees Celcius; in January the average high is 8 degree Celcius. It receives an average annual rainfall of 145 cm.

Hangzhou is also a rail hub with important links to Shanghai. Has long been a famous silk-producing center, Hangzhou has been recently developed into a major industrial complex. Manufactures include silk and cotton textiles, iron and steel products, motor vehicles, pharmaceuticals, cement, rubber, paper and bamboo products, chemicals, machine tools, electronic equipment, and processed tea. Among them, the silk and the dragon well tea are famed all over the world.
 
Hangzhou, known as "paradise on earth," has a humid climate, fresh air, well-ordered environment, and the West Lake as its back garden. The land around Hangzhou City is one of "fish and rice" as well as a production base for silk. It is renowned for scenic beauty, such as Ling Yin Temple, Taihu Lake, Qian Dao Lake and so forth. Just as a famous Chinese saying goes, “As there is paradise in Heaven, so there are Suzhou and Hangzhou on earth.”
