Lhasa

Lhasa, the capital of Tibet Autonomous Region and one of the ancient holy cities of the world, is Photo of Lhasa Potala Palacelocated in the southern part of the Tibetan high plateau at an altitude of 3,650m above sea level and on roughly the same longitude as Cairo. The dominant peaks surrounding Lhasa range between 4,400m and 5,300m above sea level. The northern part of Lhasa is higher than the southern part. The middle southern part is the plain, the topography there is very even. The city itself is built on a plain of marshy grounds, dominated by the three hills, Marpori ("red mountain"), Chakpori ("iron mountain") and Barmari ("rabbit mountain"). It is the plateau monsoon climate in the temperate zone. It has an average annual temperature of 7.5, and an average annual precipitation of 454mm.With the annual sunshine period lasting for more than 3,000 hours, Lhasa is famed as “the City of Sunshine”.
Lhasa is abundant in natural resources. It has discovered more than 30 types of minerals such as iron, copper, lead, gold, coal, corundum, plaster stone, sulfur and kaolin. The reserves of corundum and geothermal heat rank first in the country, natural sulfur third place, and kaolin fifth place. Lhasa has over 20 types of herbal medicines including Chinese caterpillar fungus, the bulb of fritillary, snow lotus and rhubarb. Agriculture here is very important. Mainly, there is wheat, highland barley, tomatoes, cucumber and so on. In the animal husbandry, cow bleeding is in the first place. Many rare animals and plants also can be found here. Lhasa is famous for its agricultural machine, power, leather, food and motorcar reparation and concrete. The national handicraft is famous too.
Lhasa was perhaps old Tibet's only true city. Today, Lhasa is still the biggest urban settlement in the Tibet Autonomous Region, and has retained its importance as a holy city for the entire realm of Lamaist Buddhism. Lhasa also has been, and to some extent still is, an extraordinary cultural centre, where traditional medicine, astrology, philosophy and Buddhism could be studied in great institutions of learning.
The remains of the old city represent a living witness to history. Lhasa’s buildings are a rare example of urban Tibetan architecture, and the old city allows the visitors to view development that originally took place over centuries by simply taking a few steps.
