Tombs
of the Tibetan Kings, covering a total of 385 square meters, is on the
top of Mount Muri in Qungjie County. The tombs are protected by the mountains
in back and guarded by stone lions erected on the mountain slope. There
are steles among the tombs to honor the dead, suggesting that by that
time the Tibetans had developed a sophisticated system for burying their
dead. One stele in particular is carved with floating clouds and the four
corners of the stele are turned up toward the sky. Among the tombs from
the 29th king to the 40th kings, the last king of the Turpan regime, King
Songtsen Gampo's is the most famous.
