The dazzling Shanghai Grand Theatre sits in the northwest of People’s Square. It was designed
by a French architect, originally built in 1928.
The theatre appears to made almost entirely from glass. it consists of 3 theatres for performing opera, ballet, symphony, chamber music, stage play and dance drama. It is equipped with an automatic mechanical stage, the largest and most advanced in Asia.
The roof of the theatre is an upturned arc, resembling a treasure bowl and said to symbolize Shanghai's openness and progressive spirit. A immense chandelier id suspended from the ceiling of the theatre which sparkles and glistens across the entire square.
