The Bund is one of the most recognizable architectural symbols of Shanghai. It
begins at the estuary of Suzhou Creek in the north and ends at Jinling
Road in the south, with a total length of 1.5 kilometers. The newly-built
Flood Control Bank takes the function of preventing the oversize flood.
Walking
along the Bund, the Oriental Pearl TV Tower can be seen on the opposite
side and also the Jin Mao Tower. The Bund is a selection of west riverside
of Huangpu, the mother river of Shanghai, and it is a record of architecture
of times from around the world. Most of the architecture were bank buildings
or other commercial buildings. Though these buildings represent different
architectural styles, such like Gothic, Baroque, Romanesque, Renaissance
and Chinese-Western combined, they are identical in their tones and skylines
are harmonious. One of the grandest of these buildings, formerly the City
Communist Party headquarters, is now the home of the Shanghai Pudong Development
Bank. The wide riverfront promenade on the east bank of the river provides
a captivating view of Shanghai, particularly at night.
