Red Hill is
located at the center of Urumqi, Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region. It is aside
the Urumqi River with 910 meters above sea level. As a symbol of Urumqi, it is
unique for making up of reddish-brown rocks.
At the top of the hill stands
8-meter high pagoda with nine stories, called "Zhenlong pagoda"(Pagoda
to Suppress Dragons). According to the historical records, in 1785 and 1786, floods
hit Urumqi, the water from the Urumqi River would flood the city. People in that
time thought that it was done by an evil dragon, so the pagoda was built to suppress
dragon. After two hundred years of weathering, the pagoda still solid and basically
fine. Visitors can get a bird-view of the whole city of Urumqi on the top of Red
Hill.
