The
aim of the teaching of Confucius was to bring about social reforms through education,
the individuals of society; to put forth an ideal social order through
cultivating ideal ways of life and a full development of the personality
of the individual. Confucius put the importance of education on the
same level as that of population and wealth, and regarded these as the
three essentials of any nation.
Confucius
was fully aware of the importance of social institutions to ensure the
stability and safety of individuals. Society must adjust itself to the
individual in order to escape stagnation, and the individual must also
adjust himself to society in order to become human, no one can live
or develop as a human without the help of society. Therefore, Confucius
did not teach people, as the pessimists of his time did, to flee from
the world and to become irresponsible hermits or political nihilists.
Confucius thought what was needed was work in society to bring about
social reforms through education.
