Datong situated in the central of Datong Basin, the northern part of shanxi province. With an area of 2,071 square kilometer and a population of more than 2 million, Datong is an historical and culture city and an important industry base in China.
Datong is surrounded mountains with Yu River running across from south to north, andits central and south part are occupied by plains. It has a temperate continental climate with an annual average temperature of 6.4 °C and an annual precipitation of 400-500mm. The weather is dry and windy.
Datong enjoys convenient transport and communications, and boasts rich mineral resources and strong solid industrial foundation. It is now an energy and heavy chemical base in China, and is especially famous for coal production, which wins it the name of "the capital of coal." Datong not only has coal, but also has other mineral deposits, including iron, graphite, aluminum, mica, feldspar, and manganese. The output of coal ranks the highest in China. Apart from the production of coal, machinery, power, and construction materials, Datong is also a major locomotive producer of China to make steam engines and power engines. The chief farm products include millet, corn, potatoes, grain, oat, flax, and beet.
With a long history, Datong was the capital city in Northern Wei Dynasty and then named Heng'an County in North Qin dynasty, renamed Yunzhong in Sui dynasty, and became Datong government office in Ming and Qing dynasties. Many of the historical relics were well preserved here, such as the Yungang Grottoes, the Huayan Monastery, the Shanhua Monastery, and the Nine Dragon Wall. Besides, the beautiful natural scenery spot of Hengshan (one of the five holy mountains of Taoism) has charming landscapes.
